Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has announced his country’s intensified efforts to combat French neocolonialism and expose it on the international stage. In his speech at the Second Shusha Global Media Forum, “Exposing False Narratives: Fighting Disinformation,” Aliyev reaffirmed his support for the independence of several French territories, which he described as being “under colonial rule.”
Active Measures within the Non-Aligned Movement
Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan began to actively address this issue immediately after assuming the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement. He recalled that many countries, including the Comoros and Mayotte, still suffer from colonial rule. “It is our duty to help these countries free themselves from this abhorrent relic of the past,” emphasized the President of Azerbaijan.
Criticism of French Policy and Media
Aliyev also criticized the French government for using controlled media to accuse Azerbaijan of interfering in France’s internal affairs. “We are doing this in response to their anti-Azerbaijani actions in the UN Security Council, the European Union, and other institutions where France has effectively launched a cold war against us,” he said.
The president stressed that France has no right to control the rights of people living more than 10,000 kilometers away from its territory. He blamed the French government for recent events in New Caledonia, where seven people died.
Support for Anti-Colonial Struggles
Aliyev assured that Azerbaijan will continue to support all peoples suffering from colonialism, using all available resources, particularly through the Baku Initiative Group. “Few countries can afford to accuse France of colonial actions,” he added, emphasizing that many countries prefer to ignore these problems to avoid criticism from the French press.
International Support and Forum Organization
On July 17-18, a congress was held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, attended by leaders of over 15 political parties and movements advocating for the independence of French territories, such as Corsica, Melanesia, Polynesia, and groups from the Caribbean and the Antilles. The event was organized by the People’s Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe with the support of the Baku Initiative Group.
This event highlights Azerbaijan’s diplomatic efforts to combat neocolonialism and support the independence and self-determination of peoples suffering from colonial oppression.
