On the evening of July 10, an act of vandalism occurred in Obninsk, Kaluga region, on the territory of the local synagogue. Unknown intruders entered the territory, set fire to the internal electrical substation and tried to enter the building. This was announced by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEGR) on its website.
According to the report, the vandals broke part of the fence, broke the windows of the main building and tried to break down the door, but they did not manage to get inside the synagogue. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
The president of FEGR, Rabbi Oleksandr Boroda, sharply condemned what happened and called on the authorities not to leave this incident without attention. “An attack on a religious object is an act of extremism and the perpetrators must be punished,” he said.
The Jewish community of Obninsk has about 800 people. This incident caused considerable concern among community members. Leading Russian news agencies, including RIA Novosti and TASS, also reported on this act of vandalism.
The authorities of Obninsk have already started an investigation. This case once again highlights the need for increased security measures around religious sites and the importance of protecting the rights of believers to freedom of conscience and religion.
