Special operation in the shrine: the cross was safely removed
In the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a cross on the dome of one of the churches partially collapsed. To safely dismantle it, rescuers arrived at the scene and carefully removed the structure using special equipment.
According to the press service of the State Emergency Service, the call was received on 8 March at 13:05. The incident took place on the territory of Lavrsky Lane in the Pechersk district of the capital.
“Upon arrival, the rescuers found that a cross had partially collapsed on the dome of one of the churches of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. To safely dismantle it, a crank lift was used, with the help of which specialists climbed to the structure, carefully removed the fasteners and safely lowered it to the ground,” the SES said in a statement.
What caused the collapse?
There are no official comments on the cause of the accident. However, according to preliminary estimates, deterioration of the structure or weather conditions could have been a possible factor.
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is one of the main shrines of Ukraine and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this regard, any damage to the buildings on its territory attracts special attention.
Experts will soon assess the condition of the dome and decide on the restoration of the cross.
