After a rocket attack on a residential area of Sumy on 24 March damaged six educational institutions, all students who were studying in shelters remained unharmed. This was reported by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi on his Facebook page.
“Sumy. Another terrorist act by Russia… Six educational institutions were damaged. Fortunately, all the students who were at school at the time of the attack are alive and well. The educational process in the city is taking place in shelters,” the minister said. He emphasised the importance of education in shelters for the safety of children.
Lisovyi thanked the teachers and psychologists who stayed with the children during the shelling and promptly provided the necessary psychological assistance after the experience. Such training in shelters requires high professionalism from teachers.
On the afternoon of 24 March, Russian troops launched another missile attack on the civilian population of Sumy. As a result, 94 people sought medical assistance, including 71 adults and 23 children. Some of the victims were treated on the spot, but most were hospitalised.
Despite the horrors of war, Sumy did not give up. Education continues even underground, in protective shelters. Ukrainian educators have once again proved that school is not only about knowledge, but also about support, endurance and care. That is why studying in shelters has become a symbol of resilience. It is this resilience during schooling in shelters that sets an example for everyone.
