According to SCMP, the US Department of Justice announced the guilty plea of an American businessman who tried to illegally export sensitive military technology to China.
David S. Bomerwald, owner of North Carolina-based Components Cooper Inc. admitted that he tried to supply 100 accelerometers to China without a licence, devices that are critical for navigation, flight control, structural testing and monitoring in military operations.
“This technology can provide greater accuracy of missile navigation and allows recording the impact of ammunition on structures. That is why a special licence is required to export them to China,” the US Department of Justice said.
Bomerwald was accused of violating the Export Control Reform Act (ECRA), which gives the US authorities the ability to prevent the transfer of sensitive technologies that could threaten national security.
This is another high-profile case in a series of US investigations to prevent the leakage of strategic technologies to China amid heightened competition between states in the defence sector.
It is expected that the court will soon announce the verdict against Bomerwald, who could face a lengthy prison sentence.
