An abnormal cold wave “Coral” is coming to Israel: snowfall is forecast in Jerusalem

Forecasters expect a sharp cold snap and snow even in the centre of the country

The Israeli Meteorological Service has announced that the upcoming wave of cold and precipitation has been officially named Coral (קורל). According to Newsru.co.il, a significant drop in temperature will be accompanied by rain and heavy snowfall.

Where to expect snow?

Golan Heights – snowfall will begin on Thursday, 20 February, and will last for at least a week.

The mountains of central Israel, including Jerusalem – snow is expected from 23 February.

At altitudes of 500-700 metres above sea level, there is a high probability of snow covering a large part of Jerusalem.

Friday-Saturday, 21-22 February

A sharp cold snap, heavy rains.

Sunday-Monday, 23-24 February

At night, temperatures will drop to 0°C.

It will snow and rain for two days in a row.

During the day, the temperature will be 2-3°C, with snow accumulation possible.

Golan Heights: snow storm to last a week

At the top of Mount Hermon, temperatures will drop below freezing. Heavy snow is expected, which will not stop for several days in a row.

The Hermon ski resort is closed by the IDF.

Driving is allowed in some areas of the Golan Heights, but cautionis advised due toicy conditions.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service is preparing to use all-terrain vehicles in snowy areas.

Road services plan to respond quickly to possible road blockages due to snowfall.

The snowiest winters in Israel’s history

2013 – snow storms in December and January, with wet snow falling even in coastal areas.

2011-2012 – heavy snow in Jerusalem that lasted for several days.
