24 February 2025 – On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the enemy struck again at civilian infrastructure in the Sumy region. The Russian army attacked a car in Sumy with a drone and shelled the Velykopysarivska community with artillery. The attacks killed two people and injured five others.
Drone attack on a civilian car in Sumy
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, at around 16:00, a Russian drone attacked a civilian car travelling along one of the central streets of Sumy.
Consequences of the attack:
– The 62-year-old driver diedof his injuries in an ambulance.
– The 31-year-old passengerwas seriously injured and hospitalised.
The targeted attack on civilian transport once again demonstrates gross violations of international humanitarian law by Russia, which continues to attack civilians.
Shelling of Velykopysarivska community: one more dead
Earlier that day, around 11:00, the Russian army shelled the Velykopysarivska community with artillery.
Consequences of the shelling:
– A local resident was killed.
– Fourother people sustainedinjuries of varying severity.
The shelling took place in the residential sector, damaging houses and infrastructure.
Reaction of the authorities and services
Rescuers, police and investigators are working at the sites of the attacks. Law enforcement officers are documenting Russia’s war crimes for further investigation.
The Office of the Prosecutor General has already opened criminal proceedings over violations of the laws and customs of war.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has once again called on residents of border regions not to ignore the alarms and to evacuate from dangerous areas if possible.
No safe place?
Sumy region continues to be one of the most vulnerable areas, suffering from constant shelling and drone attacks. In recent weeks alone, the region has suffered several large-scale attacks that have resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
Russian troops systematically attack residential areas, transport and infrastructure, disregarding any norms of international law.
The world must see these crimes and bring the aggressor to justice.
