On the evening of 4 April, the Russian army launched a rocket attack on a residential area of Kryvyi Rih. According to the latest reports, at least 14 people were killed, including six children. More than 50 people were injured.

This was announced by the head of the Dnipro Regional Military Administration Serhiy Lysak, the head of the Kryvyi Rih Defence Council Oleksandr Vilkul and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ballistics on a residential area

According to Vilkul, the Russians hit the centre of a residential neighbourhood with a ballistic missile. The first reports said 12 people were killed, two of them children. Later, Serhiy Lysak clarified that the death toll had risen to 14, including six children. The strikes caused large-scale fires, damaged multi-storey buildings, and destroyed civilian infrastructure.

Oleksandr Vilkul also noted that there was a playground near the site of the hit, which could have caused more casualties among the youngest.

Rescue operations continue

Rescuers, doctors and law enforcement officers are working at the scene of the tragedy. People are being evacuated from the affected buildings, and the bodies of the dead and injured are being removed from the rubble. The number of victims continues to grow. The city’s medical facilities are working in emergency mode.

Statement by the President

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded promptly to the tragedy.

“A Russian missile in an ordinary city. Just down the street. On the territory with residential buildings. Preliminary, it was a ballistic missile strike. As of now, 14 people have been killed, including 6 children. My condolences to the families and friends.

The rescue operation continues. At least 5 houses have been damaged,” Zelensky wrote on social media.

Ruthless terror against civilians

This strike is yet another indication that Russia continues to wage war against the civilian population of Ukraine, disregarding any norms of international humanitarian law. The strike on a residential area in the evening, when people were at home, indicates a targeted attack on civilians.

The Ukrainian government calls on the international community not to leave these crimes unanswered and to increase pressure on the aggressor.
