Biden refused to participate in the election due to the risk of “distraction”

U.S. President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the re-election race, citing concerns among Democrats about the potential for election failure. According to Biden, the lack of support from his party and the potential risks of distracting from the country’s key issues were decisive factors in his choice.

In an interview with CBS News, Biden mentioned internal party pressure, particularly from former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who advocated for a change in the candidate. Pelosi, in turn, expressed concern about the upcoming election results, stating that Biden could have harmed Democrats in their pursuit of victory.

Biden also emphasized that pursuing a second term could have become a “real distraction” from the important issues facing the country. His decision to step out of the race makes him the first sitting U.S. president since 1968 to not seek a second term. This move, experts note, is aimed at passing leadership to a younger generation of leaders.

Pelosi praised Vice President Kamala Harris’s political acumen, who now becomes the leading Democratic candidate for the presidential election. Biden and Harris plan to hold a joint rally in Maryland, marking their first appearance together since Biden announced his withdrawal from the race.
