The United Kingdom is preparing to announce the largest package of sanctions against Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion. According to Foreign Secretary David Lammy, the restrictions will be aimed at destroying the Kremlin’s military and economic base. This was reported by Bloomberg.

“It is time to increase the pressure on the Putin regime. Tomorrow, I will announce the largest package of sanctions against Russia to destroy its military machine and cut the revenues that support the war in Ukraine,” Lemmy said.

Along with the UK, the EU is planning to adopt a new package of sanctions on Monday. In particular, a ban on imports of Russian aluminium is expected.

London has already imposed sanctions on more than 1,900 individuals and entities, including representatives of Russia’s financial, aviation, military and energy sectors.

Continued support for Ukraine

Lemmy stressed that the UK remains Kyiv’s key ally and will provide Ukraine with £3 billion (€3.6 billion) in military aid annually.

“This is a crucial moment in the history of Ukraine, Britain and the whole of Europe. We will continue to support Kyiv, and we are considering sending British troops on a peacekeeping mission if a ceasefire is reached,” he said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to meet in Washington this week with Donald Trump, who has recently escalated his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. European leaders are concerned about the possibility of a deal between the US and Russia on terms favourable to the Kremlin.
