London, UK – British Foreign Secretary David Lammy made a strong statement after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke at a closed-door meeting of G20 diplomats in South Africa. According to Reuters, Lemmy expressed concern that Moscow did not show a real desire to reach peace with Ukraine.
“We are no closer to a negotiated settlement. And I have to say that when I listen to what the Russians are saying, and what Lavrov just said in the House today, I don’t see any drive to actually get to that peace,” said David Lammy.
Tensions among G20 members
The meeting of the G20 foreign ministers in South Africa was overshadowed by heated disputes over the war in Ukraine. Lemmy stressed that even at the diplomatic level, it was not possible to bring the parties closer to a peaceful settlement.
The potential presence of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine was an important topic of discussion. When asked about London’s possible support for the deployment of peacekeepers in the absence of security guarantees from the United States, Lemmy gave an evasive answer, hinting at the complexity of the situation and the need for a strategic approach.
Europe’s position: a path to peace?
Amid growing diplomatic tensions, European Council President Antonio Costa called for united efforts. He announced a meeting of EU and NATO leaders in Paris to discuss the situation in Ukraine and European security.
“This meeting is the beginning of a process that will involve all partners committed to peace,” Costa said.
However, while European leaders are looking for ways to resolve the conflict diplomatically, Lavrov’s speech at the G20 once again demonstrated the Kremlin’s hardline stance, which complicates any negotiations.
What’s next?
The absence of concrete steps by Russia towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict threatens the stability of the entire region. Western countries are looking for effective ways to influence the situation, but the diplomatic stalemate seems to be continuing.
