American businessman Stephen Lynch has asked the US government to allow him to participate in an auction for the abandoned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, if it is held in Switzerland as part of bankruptcy proceedings. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Lynch argues that American ownership of the pipeline could be a strategic advantage in peace talks with Russia and contribute to long-term US interests.

“This is a unique opportunity for America and Europe to control Europe’s energy supply in an era that is ending the fossil fuel era,” Lynch said.

However, to participate in the deal, the investor needs to obtain Washington’s approval, as companies associated with Nord Stream 2 are subject to US sanctions.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, operated by the Swiss subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom, Nord Stream 2 AG, was damaged in September 2022 due to a series of explosions that put it out of service.
