US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% duty on all cars that are not manufactured in the United States. This decision will come into force on 2 April and is aimed at stimulating domestic production and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
“We will make countries that do business in the US and take our wealth pay. All cars made outside the US will now be subject to a 25% tariff,” Trump said at the White House.
At the same time, the president noted that there will be no duties on cars assembled in the US. The administration official also clarified that the new tariffs would be added to the existing restrictions on car imports.
According to Trump, these duties will be permanent, although he called them “very mild” compared to other possible measures. The decision is expected to spark new trade disputes between the US and major auto exporters, including the European Union, Japan and South Korea.
