US President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of a 25% duty on all steel and aluminium imports to the US. He made the announcement on board the presidential aircraft Air Force One, CNN reports.

“We will announce steel tariffs. Any steel coming into the United States will be subject to a 25% duty. And aluminium, too,” Trump said.

According to him, next week he will hold a press conference to officially present large-scale reciprocal duties aimed at equalising other countries’ tariffs on US goods in dollar terms.

“It’s very simple: if they charge us, we charge them,” the US president added.

He also spoke about the Japanese company Nippon Steel, which invests in the US steel giant US Steel. Trump stressed that the United States would not allow the Japanese company to acquire a controlling stake in the company.

According to government agencies and the American Iron and Steel Institute, the main steel exporters to the US are Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam. Canada remains the main supplier of aluminium, accounting for 79% of imports in the first 11 months of 2024.
