Ukraine files first declaration for export of biomethane to the EU

Ukraine has taken an important step towards green energy: The Energy Customs of the State Customs Service has issued a customs declaration for the export of biomethane for the first time. The first batch of green gas will be supplied to Europe by pipeline, the agency’s press service reports on Facebook.

Biomethane is a new energy prospect for Ukraine

Biomethane is an environmentally friendly gas produced from organic waste. Its export opens up new opportunities for the agricultural sector and bioenergy investors.

“Ukraine has a huge potential in biomethane production and can become an important supplier of green energy in the European market. We are taking another step towards sustainable energy and economic growth,” the Energy Customs said.

Development of the biomethane industry

As of January 2025, there are three biomethane plants in operation in Ukraine.
Four more are planned to be launched within the year, which will increase the total production capacity to 111 million cubic metres of biomethane per year.
In early January, Ukrainian producers pumped the first million cubic metres of biomethane into underground storage facilities.

This step not only strengthens the country’s energy independence but also makes it an important player in the European renewable energy market.
