Between January and September 2024, Ukraine increased its agricultural exports by 9.9 million tonnes, a quarter more than the previous year. The total gain from this increase was $1.4 billion, the State Customs Service reported on Wednesday, 23 October. In the first three quarters of this year, 48.9 million tonnes of agricultural products worth $10.5 billion were exported.
The main factor behind this growth was the restoration of stable maritime traffic, which accounted for 89% of total exports. On land, agricultural products are mainly transported by rail, while only 2% are transported by road.
Grains remain the key export group, with 42.3 million tonnes worth $7.1 billion. Oilseeds are also an important component – 5 million tonnes, which brought Ukraine $2.2 billion.
As for imports, 80% of agricultural products come by road, about 18% by sea, and almost 2% by rail. This structure is associated with imports mainly from European countries, while exports cover markets around the world. In total, Ukraine imported 978.8 thousand tonnes of agricultural products worth $1.7 billion.
The most important imported products are edible fruits and nuts – 468 thousand tonnes worth $563.8 million. Vegetables (194.2 thousand tonnes worth $246.6 million) and oilseeds (50.2 thousand tonnes worth $346.5 million) are also among the leaders in terms of imported goods.
