China and the US have 60 days to resolve trade dispute in the WTO

China and the United States have 60 days to reach an agreement on a dispute over a 10% US duty on all Chinese imports, avoiding arbitration proceedings within the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This was reported by the WTO press service.

Beijing has requested consultations with the US on new tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. According to the international organisation, China believes that 10% additional duties contradict the US obligations on most favoured nation treatment enshrined in a number of WTO international agreements.

“The request for consultations initiates the WTO dispute procedure, which gives the parties the opportunity to discuss the issue and find a satisfactory solution without the need to resort to arbitration. If a compromise is not reached within 60 days, China may request the participation of an arbitration panel to settle the dispute,” the WTO said in a statement.
