Selena Gomez, Timothee Chalamet and other Hollywood stars gathered in Beverly Hills on Sunday to attend the annual Golden Globe Awards, the first major event of the 2024 awards season. This year, there is no clear favourite, adding to the intrigue of the battle for the prestigious statuettes, Reuters reports.
Film favourites of the ceremony
Among the leaders are the Spanish-language musical thriller Emilia Perez (Netflix) and the three-hour drama The Brutalist, set after World War II. They are opposed by the adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked and the drama The Conclave, which tells the story of the election of a new pope.
In the TV nominations, the Bear, a series about restaurant cuisine, and Murders in the Same Building, a comedy detective story, are competing.
Hostess and ceremony features
The ceremony, which will be hosted for the first time by actress and comedian Nikki Glaser, will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ and will begin on Sunday at 01:00 Kyiv time.
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes separate musicals and comedies into a separate category. For example, The Brutalist is competing for Best Drama Film, while Wicked is the favourite among musicals.
Nominees and intrigue
Timothée Chalamet is up for Best Actor for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and his competitors include Adrien Brody in the drama The Brutalist.
Selena Gomez received two nominations at once: for her role in Emilia Perez, where her character is a gender reassignment drug lord, and for her role in the TV series Murders in the Same Building.
Other actors nominated for awards include Angelina Jolie for her role as opera singer Maria Callas, Nicole Kidman for her role as an ambitious CEO in Babygirl, and Zendaya for her role as a tennis coach in the drama Challengers.
The road to the Oscars
Although the Golden Globe is not a direct indicator of winning the Oscars, its winners significantly increase their chances. The main film ceremony of the year will take place in March 2024.
This year’s competition promises to be intense, and the choice of winners is highly unpredictable.
