The American actor Tom Cruise has started negotiations with Paramount Pictures on the sequel to Days of Thunder, a 1990 film that told the story of a young racing driver played by Cruise himself. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the news comes two years after the stunning success of Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office.
The project of the new Days of Thunder is currently in the early stages of development. It is known that the script has not yet been written, and Tom Cruise’s availability for filming remains unclear, Deadline and Variety write.
The original Days of Thunder, despite its popularity among car racing fans, was not a commercial success. With a budget of $60 million, the film grossed only $157 million at the global box office, and was met with a lukewarm reception from critics. But now, following Cruise’s successful return to the role in the sequel to Top Gun, interest in reviving Days of Thunder has grown significantly.
Meanwhile, Cruise is already working on several large-scale projects: he will soon take part in a film by the outstanding director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and the third part of Top Gun is also planned. In addition, the eighth instalment of Mission Impossible is in post-production and is ready to surprise the audience next year.
