The American Film Academy has released the longlist of nominees for the 2025 Academy Awards. Ukraine is represented in two categories: International Feature Film and Feature Documentary.
International feature film
The longlist includes the film La Palisade directed by Philip Sotnychenko. The film is set in 1996, during Ukraine’s transition from the Soviet system to independence. The plot centres on a detective and a forensic psychiatrist who investigate the mysterious murder of a policeman.
Feature-length documentary film
Ukrainian documentaries received special attention in this category.
“The Porcelain War is a story of Kharkiv ceramic artists who stayed in the city during the war, resisting fear and the enemy.
“After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Return Home” (directed by Sarah McCarthy, Canada) is a story about the return of Ukrainian children who were illegally taken to Russia back to their families.
“Peaceful People (directed by Oksana Karpovych) is a film that combines intercepted conversations of the Russian occupiers with a visual depiction of the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
The shortlists will be announced on 17 December, and the full list of nominees will be announced on 17 January 2025.
Ukrainian cinema is confidently holding the attention of the international community by telling stories of struggle, art and human destiny in the midst of war.
