Brigadier General Daniel Hagari, who is completing his term as spokesman for the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), made a frank statement about the army’s role after the tragic events of 7 October. In his final address, he stressed that the main challenge of the last year and a half has been to restore public trust.
“Public trust is the most valuable asset for the IDF,” Hagar said. According to him, after the Hamas terrorist attack, which became the most painful failure in the history of Israeli security, the army’s main task was not only to respond to the enemy, but also to restore public confidence in its ability to defend the country.
Hagar called on the public to “hold the army above any disputes, disagreements or other attempts to undermine its credibility”. He also called on all Israelis – regardless of social status – to join the IDF.
“We need additional forces now, not in a few years. The war is going on right now,” he stressed.
Hagar’s statement came amid ongoing confrontation on several fronts and a tense internal atmosphere in Israel. His words are seen as an attempt to unite the nation around the army at a time when morale and trust in institutions are crucial to the country’s future.
