The European Union is finally abandoning energy imports from Russia, both in the short and long term. This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen in Warsaw before the start of an informal meeting of EU energy ministers held under the auspices of the Polish presidency. This was reported by Ukrinform.
“We will not allow energy to be turned into weapons anymore. We will not replenish Putin’s “war chest” – neither now nor after the war is over,” Jorgensen stressed.
According to him, the European Commission’s new roadmap envisages full energy independence from Russia.
“Not a single molecule” is a position that will not change
When asked about a possible return to Russian gas in the future, Jorgensen was unequivocal:
“We do not want to import a single molecule of energy from Russia in the future. And this does not depend on the negotiations that are currently underway. This is a clear signal that we have put an end to our dependence,” he stressed.
Europe stands in solidarity with Ukraine
According to the European Commissioner, this step is not only a security issue, but also an act of political solidarity with Ukraine.
The decision was made against the backdrop of the Kremlin’s attempts to use energy resources as a lever of influence on European governments – and as a source of funding for the war against Ukraine.
