This year, the Federal Republic of Germany may increase its total support for Ukraine to an unprecedented €9 billion. This was stated by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius during his visit to Kyiv, emphasising the strategic importance of this assistance not only for Ukraine but also for the security of the whole of Europe.
“We are planning to provide €9 billion to support Ukraine,” Pistorius said after a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, the initial amount of aid was €4 billion, later it was increased to €7 billion, and now a possible additional €1.9 billion is being discussed. The final decision on the latter amount has not yet been made, but part of the funds will be used to finance the Ukrainian production of long-range weapons.
At the same time, Pistorius stressed that the German government is not currently considering the transfer of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, despite numerous calls from Kyiv and some German politicians.
The head of the German defence ministry stressed that Ukraine is fighting a defensive war, which is a key factor of stability for the European continent. Given the recent escalation of Russian attacks, Pistorius called on partners to support Ukraine even more resolutely.
