Following his 12th visit to Ukraine, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that the threat to nuclear safety in Ukraine remains “very real and persistent”. This was stated in his official statement.

The main thing:

  • The IAEA teams at Khmelnytsky and Rivne NPPs were forced to go into shelters several times due to air raid alarms.
  • Grossi called 3 June “the most intense day of air alerts” for the agency’s missions since the end of 2023.
  • The shelling did not directly affect the operation of the stations, but highlighted the vulnerability of the infrastructure.
  • The priorities of the visit include the restoration of damaged nuclear facilities and preparations for the post-war period.

Meetings:

  • Raphaël Grossi held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko and Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga – partly in cover due to an alarm.
  • He will also visit Russia this week for talks on nuclear safety.

Quote:

“The IAEA remains committed to ensuring the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities until the end of the war, as well as preparing for their restoration”, Rafael Grossi.
