Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the construction of new giant data centres for artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States, the BBC reports.

According to Zuckerberg, the goal of the investment is to create a “superintelligence” – a powerful AI system capable of surpassing human intelligence. The company has already begun construction of the first centres, which have been given large-scale names: Prometheus and Hyperion.

The first multi-gigawatt Prometheus centre will be built in Ohio and is due to start operating in 2026. Its area will be comparable to the territory of Manhattan – about 59 square kilometres.

Another project, the Hyperion centre, is planned to be built in Louisiana. It will be able to scale up to five gigawatts and is expected to be fully operational by 2030.

Meta, whose main revenue is generated by online advertising, generated over USD 160 billion in revenue in 2024. The company uses part of these funds to develop new technologies, including AI infrastructure.

There are currently more than 10,000 data centres in the world, most of which are concentrated in the US, UK and Germany.
