The Slovak state-owned power grid operator SEPS said that, despite recent statements by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, electricity supplies to Ukraine will not be cut off. This was reported by DW.
On Friday, 3 January, SEPS assured the Czech news agency CTK that all obligations to Ukraine remain in force. “We will continue to comply with the contracts concluded with Ukrenergo,” the operator said.
Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the government would discuss possible measures in response to Ukraine’s suspension of Russian gas transit. Among the options voiced were the cessation of electricity supplies to Ukraine and a reduction in aid to Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia.
However, SEPS stressed that electricity supply to Ukraine remains a priority, despite the political rhetoric.
This statement is an important signal in the context of complex energy relations between the countries and reminds us of the importance of adhering to international agreements even in times of political tension.
