The National Bank of Ukraine has extended the deadline for exchanging small-denomination coins and old-style banknotes that were put into circulation before 2003. According to the new decisions, Ukrainians can exchange this money until the end of martial law and for another three months (90 days) after its cancellation. This step is aimed at providing additional opportunities for citizens who may not have been able to use the previous deadlines due to difficult life circumstances related to the war, the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine reported.

How will the exchange take place?

You can exchange 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopiika coins and old-style 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 hryvnia banknotes free of charge and without restrictions at the following institutions:

Status of coins and banknotes in circulation

Today, there are about 7.2 billion 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopiika coins in circulation. More than 220 million of these coins have already been exchanged, including more than 3 million in the last month alone. As for the old-style banknotes, only about 1.5% of the total number remain. Between 2020 and 2023, Ukrainians exchanged 400,000 of these banknotes, including 8,400 in September this year.

We remind you that starting from 1 October 2019, 1, 2 and 5 kopiika coins will no longer be accepted for cash payments. Starting from 1 October 2020, the NBU will start withdrawing 25 kopiika coins and old-style 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 hryvnia banknotes. This is part of the NBU’s strategy to optimise the hryvnia denomination range, which helps to improve the security and quality of money, as well as simplify cash payments.

The extension of the exchange period was made possible by the Resolution of the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine No. 119 dated 28 September 2023. This step underscores the bank’s efforts to support citizens under martial law and create comfortable conditions for financial transactions.
