In the Black Sea, Turkish geologists have made a strategic discovery – a new natural gas field with a volume of 75 billion cubic metres and an estimated economic value of $30 billion. This was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his page on the social network X.
“A new natural gas discovery in Turkey. Location: Göktepe-3 field in the Black Sea. Volume: 75 billion cubic metres. Economic value: $30 billion,” Erdogan said.
According to the Turkish president, the volume of gas discovered is sufficient to supply all households in the country for 3.5 years, bringing Turkey closer to the goal of full energy independence.
This is not Turkey’s first major discovery in the Black Sea – in recent years, Ankara has been actively investing in geological exploration and offshore drilling in an effort to reduce its dependence on energy imports, particularly from Russia and Iran.
Turkey already has large-scale energy projects in place, including the national gas platform Sakarya, and the opening of Goktepe-3 could be a new stage in the country’s energy transformation.
Experts predict that the first volumes of production from the new field could hit the domestic market within the next 2-3 years.
