Ukraine’s external and internal debt will reach 8.2 trillion UAH by the end of 2024, but it is expected to drop from 100.5% to 97% of GDP in 2025, according to Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko. He shared this forecast during a briefing on September 24, as reported by Ukrinform.
Marchenko emphasized that while the debt figure is significant, it must be viewed in the context of Ukraine being a nation at war. “We are a country at war, so at this stage, the focus is on the short-term ability to service and repay the debt,” he explained.
The finance minister also reminded that Ukraine recently completed a successful debt restructuring, which resulted in the cancellation of nearly 40% of its obligations. Thanks to these negotiations, future debt servicing and repayment will remain minimal, he assured.
