Since the beginning of 2024, Ukrainian seaports have handled a record 91.1 million tonnes of cargo, which is 70% more than last year. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Timur Tkachenko on his Facebook page, Time Ukraine Israel reports.
“The volume of cargo handled in the period from January to November was 89.9 million tonnes, which is significantly more than 52.8 million tonnes in the same period in 2023,” Tkachenko said.
In November, the ports handled 7.6 million tonnes of cargo, exceeding last year’s result of 6.7 million tonnes.
Key cargo categories and growth leaders
Grain accounted for a significant share of cargo turnover, remaining the leader at 56.1 million tonnes, up 42% from 39.4 million tonnes in 2023. Ore cargo was in second place, with volumes increasing to 16.7 million tonnes, up from 3.2 million tonnes in the previous year.
The key role of the sea corridor
This success is largely due to the Ukrainian sea corridor, which has transported 73.4 million tonnes of cargo since the beginning of the year. More than 3,000 vessels have used the corridor since its inception, which is an important step in the country’s economic recovery.
Ukraine’s seaports continue to demonstrate resilience and efficiency, remaining a key element of transport infrastructure even in the face of the challenges posed by the war.
