In Bologna, Italy, protests against police brutality turned violent, leading to the desecration of a local synagogue. The demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at the Jewish house of worship, broke down the doors and wrote anti-Israel slogans on the walls.

The riots erupted amid the release of a video showing the death of a 19-year-old Egyptian youth, Rami al-Gamal. Rami was a passenger on a scooter driven by Fares Bouzidi from Tunisia. When the police stopped them to check their documents, Fares, who did not have a driver’s licence, decided to flee, which led to a chase that ended in a collision with a tree. As a result, al-Gamal died.

The video, which was later released to the media, shows that the scooter collided with a tree after a police car crashed into it at full speed. The incident sparked riots not only in Bologna but also in Rome and other Italian cities.

Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore strongly condemned the attack on the synagogue, calling it “outrageous and unacceptable” and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community. Representatives of the community stressed that the attack was deliberate and targeted, Ynet reported.
