Due to changes in the management and strategy of the social network X (formerly known as Twitter), the European Commission is taking decisive steps. It is demanding that Elon Musk, who acquired the company in 2022, provide detailed reports on the algorithms used to generate user content. The EU authorities have set a deadline of 15 February 2025 to provide internal documentation and details on the latest updates to recommendation systems, according to Evropeiska Pravda.
The announcement is part of a wide-ranging investigation aimed at ensuring the social network’s compliance with the EU Digital Services Act, which aims to regulate the activities of digital platforms in the European space. The move also reflects the European Commission’s concerns about the social network’s potential impact on democratic processes and the privacy of its users’ data.
Additionally, the European Commission requires X to keep all internal documents containing information about future changes in the functioning and design of algorithms until the end of 2025. The EC has also requested access to some of X’s commercial data and technical interfaces used for content moderation in order to directly verify the mechanisms for tracking and analysing account activity.
These actions of the European Commission are aimed not only at ensuring transparency and accountability of large technology platforms, but also at protecting the fundamental rights of citizens to privacy and freedom of speech in the digital age. In response to these actions, Elon Musk’s company reaffirmed its intention to cooperate with European regulators and announced that it will take appropriate measures to adapt its operations to EU requirements.
