Explosion at a market in Kyiv: two people killed, police investigate circumstances

On Wednesday, 3 April, an explosion occurred at a market in the Ukrainian capital, killing two people. This was reported by the Kyiv police on Telegram.

The incident occurred at Yunist market in Desnianskyi district of Kyiv. An investigative team, explosives experts and medics are currently working at the scene to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy.

What we know so far

According to preliminary data, the explosion could have been caused by a gas cylinder, the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) reported. According to the administration, one person died and another was injured.

However, the police reported two deaths. Final information on the number of casualties and injured is being updated.

The area around the explosion has been cordoned off, and the surrounding facilities are being checked for dangerous objects and gas leaks.

An official statement from the State Emergency Service and additional information from the Kyiv City State Administration on market safety and storage conditions for gas cylinders are expected.

Explosions at facilities with gas equipment are not uncommon in Ukraine. In this regard, the State Emergency Service has repeatedly called on entrepreneurs and owners of catering outlets to comply with safety rules when using cylinders with household gas, including checking the technical condition of the equipment and preventing violations of storage standards.

Against the backdrop of this tragedy, unscheduled inspections of markets in the capital may be carried out to prevent similar incidents in the future.
