Russian troops have entered Sudzha, Kursk region, where intense fighting continues. This was reported by a Ukrainian soldier whose unit is in the combat zone in a commentary to Suspilne.
Russians break through defences and advance in the city
According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukrainian troops repelled 33 attacks on Russian territory over the past day.
DeepState analysts working with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine recorded the occupiers’ advance in the eastern part of Suzha, from the village of Myrnyi.
Russian media have spread a video that allegedly shows the occupiers in the city centre. However, the Ukrainian military has not yet officially confirmed this information.
The fighting is escalating: Russia attacks from two directions
Earlier, Russian troops broke through the Ukrainian border near the village of Novenke, Sumy region.
Since then, they have been shelling the logistics routes used to supply Ukrainian units in the Kursk region.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia had been preparing to attack Sudzha since 10 March, and these attacks were expected.
The threat of encirclement of Ukrainian troops
The Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an offensive in the Kursk region on 6 August 2024, which was the first breakthrough of Ukrainian troops into Russia.
In December, the General Staff reported an escalation of fighting, and in January 2025, Ukraine intensified attacks in the region.
However, the situation deteriorated in March. Ukrayinska Pravda reported on 7 March that Russian troops had broken through the Ukrainian defensive line south of Suzha.
According to The Telegraph, 10,000 Ukrainian troops are under threat of encirclement after a Russian breakthrough in the Kursk region.
Censor.NET editor-in-chief Yuriy Butusov wrote on 10 March that the situation in Sudzha was “very difficult and tactically disadvantageous for the Ukrainian troops”.
What’s next?
The fighting for Suzha continues, and the situation remains critical. Russia is attempting to gain a foothold in the city and cut off Ukrainian forces, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces are counterattacking and launching artillery strikes.
Whether Ukraine will be able to maintain its strategic position or will be forced to retreat is a question that is being decided right now.
