MADRID, 21 May, Cadena SER reports – The murder of a 52-year-old man at the gates of the American School of Madrid is being investigated in the city of Posuelo de Alarcón, in the province of Madrid. The incident occurred at around 9:15 a.m. local time, when the National Police received a report through the CIMMAC 091 centre of a person in the street with gunshot wounds.

Upon arrival, the SUMMA 112 medical service pronounced the man dead due to injuries incompatible with life. The deceased was shot four times in the chest and once in the head.

Who is the victim?

According to Cadena SER, the deceased is Andriy Portnov, a former adviser to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Portnov was on the EU blacklist due to allegations of embezzlement of public funds and human rights violations in Ukraine. Although he was not convicted of these charges, the Security Service of Ukraine investigated him for his links to Russia.

Portnov was also one of the drafters of laws aimed at suppressing the Euromaidan protests in 2014, and was later investigated on charges of “high treason” for his alleged role in Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

A similar scenario to 2018

According to the police, a man on a motorbike was waiting for the victim at the entrance to the school. When Portnov arrived, the attacker opened fire and fled. This modus operandi is reminiscent of a 2018 murder at another school in Posuelo de Alarcón, the British Council.

While no theory is ruled out, sources suggest that it could be revenge or a score-settling.

Agents from the Scientific Police and Homicide Group V arrived at the scene and took over the investigation to fully clarify the circumstances.
