This week, on July 7, France will head back to the polls to determine the final winners in the majoritarian districts. President Emmanuel Macron has called on the nation for “democratic unity” to counter the far-right in the second round of parliamentary elections.
In his speech following the announcement of the first-round results, Macron emphasized the importance of high voter turnout.
“The high participation in the first round of these parliamentary elections reflects the importance of this vote for all our compatriots and the desire to clarify the political situation,” the president stated.
Macron called for “broad democratic and republican unity” ahead of the second round, which will definitively determine the winners in the majoritarian districts.
Recall that on June 9, Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and called for early elections following his social-liberal party Renaissance’s failure in the European Parliament vote.
The first round of elections, held on June 30, brought an unexpected victory for the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen, with over 33% of the votes. The leftist New People’s Front came in second with 27.99%, while Macron’s centrist bloc finished third with 20%.
The results sparked a wave of protests in the capital. Last night, thousands of people took to the streets of Paris, expressing their dissatisfaction with the National Rally’s victory in the first round. The streets were filled with slogans and banners calling for justice and unity against far-right forces.
The second round, scheduled for July 7, promises to be decisive and tense as the country watches the political situation unfold. Macron urged voters to make a choice that will help France remain a united and democratic nation.
