France, the United Kingdom and Germany will monitor the progress of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran to ensure that European security interests are protected. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said this on Monday before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Reuters reports.
“We will be watching closely with our British and German friends and partners to ensure that any negotiations between the United States and Iran are consistent with our security interests with respect to Iran’s nuclear programme,” Barro said.
Europe shows caution
France’s statement came amid preparations for the second round of talks between Washington and Tehran, which is due to take place in Rome on 19 April. European countries are concerned that any agreements between the United States and Iran do not contradict previous agreements or jeopardise regional security.
The EU has traditionally been a party to and guarantor of transparency in nuclear agreements and has stressed the importance of coordination between NATO allies and the Gulf states.
During the meeting in Luxembourg, the EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss new security challenges in the Middle East and prospects for controlling Iran’s nuclear programme.
