Olaf Scholz’s government has decided to allocate an additional €3 billion for military assistance to Ukraine in 2025. Reuters reports this with reference to German Finance Minister Jörg Kukis.
Financial support and long-term commitments
In a letter quoted by Reuters, Kukis informed the Bundestag’s budget committee that all the requirements for the additional funds had been met. The German Finance Ministry has agreed on €2.547 billion in additional spending for 2025.
Taking into account other items of expenditure, including reimbursements from the European Peace Fund, the total amount of assistance will be €3 billion.
Assistance until 2029
Germany also approved €8.252 billion in military aid for Ukraine for the period from 2026 to 2029. This brings the total increase in support to over €11 billion.
The Bundestag Budget Committee is expected to formally approve the allocation of funds on Friday, 21 March. However, the final decision will depend on the approval of the reform of the multibillion-dollar investment by the upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat.
Why is this important?
Germany remains one of the key donors of military assistance to Ukraine. The allocation of additional funds demonstrates that Berlin will continue to support Kyiv in its fight against Russian aggression in the long term.
