Jerusalem, 24 April 2025 – In response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Hamas terrorist organisation issued a statement calling the Gaza Strip the “Auschwitz of the 21st century”. In the statement, Hamas accused Israel of “genocide” of Palestinians and called Netanyahu’s words “racist and extremist”.

This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

“Gaza today is the ‘Auschwitz’ of the 21st century, where the ashes belong to the Palestinians and the perpetrators are the Zionists,” Hamas said in a statement. “Those who mourn the victims of Nazism are now the masters of genocide in our time,” they added.

This reaction was in response to a speech Netanyahu gave on 23 April at the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem. During the speech, the Prime Minister compared Hamas to the Nazis, saying that they, “like Hitler and Haman, seek to kill and exterminate all Jews”. Netanyahu stressed that Israel would “destroy these Hamas monsters” and continue to fight “fanatical regimes that threaten the whole world”.

Hamas, in turn, called these words a confirmation of Israel’s “genocidal path pursued by the fascist government”. The statement claims that Netanyahu, who speaks of “never again” in relation to the Holocaust, “is himself leading one of the most horrific acts of genocide of our time”. Hamas accused Israel of using “sophisticated Western weapons” to kill Palestinians in refugee camps, hospitals and schools.

“A genocide that does not require ovens – only the latest Western weapons – and is taking place before the eyes of the world,” Hamas said, adding that resistance to “this Zionist genocidal project” is a “legitimate right and human duty”.

These statements exacerbate the already tense situation in the region, where the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, causing numerous casualties and a humanitarian crisis. The international community continues to call for de-escalation and a peaceful solution.
