According to Israeli journalists, an agreement between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group on the release of hostages is in its final stages. Journalist Amit Segal reports that a final agreement could be reached as early as today, after which the Israeli government will hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the details of the deal. The first group of hostages may be released as early as Sunday.

Suleiman Maswadeh, a journalist with Kan TV, said that the Hamas leadership in Gaza has given preliminary approval to the agreement and that it is expected to be signed soon. There is an assumption that the official announcement could take place as early as today.

However, despite the initial agreements, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar, continues to delay the process. He is reportedly using this time to strengthen Hamas’s position and try to achieve more favourable conditions for the group.

Israel, for its part, agreed to the terms proposed by the mediators, thereby handing the initiative over to Hamas. Despite the fact that all the group’s main demands have been met, Sinwar’s slowness indicates that he is trying to obtain additional concessions.

The situation is becoming particularly tense as the inauguration of the new US President Donald Trump approaches, who will take office on 20 January and has expressed a desire to see the agreement signed by that date.
