On the evening of 24 March, in the southern Gaza Strip, in the town of Rafai, the Israeli military shelled a building where suspicious activity was recorded, which, according to the army, could pose a threat to Israeli forces. This was reported by Newsru with reference to the press service of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).
The impact caused minor damage to the building. However, after further investigation, it turned out that there had been an identification error.
“The building that was fired upon belongs to the International Committee of the Red Cross. This information was not known to the military at the time of the decision to open fire,” the official statement said.
The IDF stressed that the shelling was not intentional, and an investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances and prevent similar situations in the future.
There was no information about the victims. The International Committee of the Red Cross has not yet released an official reaction to the incident.
The incident took place against the backdrop of active hostilities in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where Israeli operations against Hamas militants are ongoing. At the same time, the international community is calling on both sides to comply with international humanitarian law and ensure the inviolability of humanitarian organisations.
