The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported that in recent hours its troops have launched a new ground operation in the Shujaya area of the northern Gaza Strip. The aim of the operation is to expand the security zone and destroy Hamas’ terrorist infrastructure.

According to the IDF, during the operation, Israeli troops killed a large number of militants and destroyed the Hamas command and control centre, which was used to plan and carry out terrorist attacks against Israel.

The IDF organised the evacuation of civilians from the war zone along pre-determined routes to ensure their safety during the fighting.

The statement notes that the Israeli Defence Forces, together with other forces, will continue to act against terrorist organisations in the Gaza Strip in order to protect Israeli citizens.

This is not the first time that the Shujaya area has been the focus of intense fighting. It is here that Hamas has an extensive network of tunnels, fortifications and key facilities, including command posts and weapons depots. In recent weeks, IDF activity in the region has increased dramatically amid threats of new rocket attacks and terrorist attacks.
