Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran is ready for nuclear talks with the United States, but only on equal terms and subject to an end to the policy of pressure.

According to Cursorinfo, Iran does not rule out diplomatic dialogue, but demands that Washington abandon the “maximum pressure” strategy that Donald Trump resumed after returning to power.

What happened?

Last week, US President Donald Trump said that he had sent an official letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in which he proposed to resume negotiations on the nuclear programme.

However, at the same time, Trump clearly stated: “There are two ways to contain Iran: militarily or through a deal.”

Iran’s position: only a level playing field

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that negotiations are possible, but not under pressure.

“If we start negotiations while the other side is applying maximum pressure, we will be in a weak position and will not achieve anything,” he stressed.

Araghchi noted that the US must recognise the ineffectiveness of sanctions policy before Iran agrees to sit down at the negotiating table.

Trump’s pressure: repeating the first term strategy

Despite diplomatic signals, Washington has resumed its “maximum pressure” campaign on Tehran to isolate the Iranian economy and reduce oil exports to zero.

Experts believe that Trump is using a hardball strategy to force Iran to give in. However, the question remains: is Tehran ready to compromise or will it continue to play for aggravation?
