Iran has officially declared its readiness to launch a direct missile strike on the US strategic military facility on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean in the event of an attack by Washington. A senior representative of the Iranian military command said this in an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph. The information was also disseminated by the Israeli outlet Cursorinfo.
According to an Iranian official, the Islamic Republic has a sufficient arsenal to hit distant targets, including outside the Middle East.
“If Washington dares to attack us from Diego Garcia, we will retaliate by striking this base. We have the technology and weapons to hit the target,” he stressed.
The following were named as potential means of attack:
– Horremshehr ballistic missiles capable of carrying limited warheads;
– Shahed-136 kamikaze strike drones, which have been upgraded for long-range and accurate attacks.
Diego Garcia Island is a key strategic outpost of the United States in the Indian Ocean region and is actively used for military missions in the Middle East and South Asia. Its potential defeat would mean a sharp escalation of the conflict between Tehran and Washington, with a possible outbreak of regional confrontation.
This was the loudest statement by Iran in recent months and indicates an increase in tensions amid the escalation of the nuclear issue and conflicts in the Middle East.
