The Kyiv Court of Appeal extended the round-the-clock house arrest of Irpin mayor Oleksandr Markushyn until 23 April.
This was reported by Suspilne from the courtroom on 19 March.
Prosecution and defence position
Markushin is suspected of illegally crossing the state border in August 2022. According to the investigation, he travelled to Italy, allegedly not to help the military, but to see his 2-year-old son.
Markushin himself called the court’s decision biased. His lawyer said that the defence would file an appeal.
How is the case developing?
The court hearing on his removal from office will take place tomorrow, 20 March.
Earlier, on 24 January, the court imposed on Markushin a preventive measure of detention until 22 March with the possibility of bail in the amount of UAH 30 million.
On 28 January, investigating judge of the Pechersk Court Svitlana Hrechana suspended the mayor of Irpin from his duties for the duration of the investigation.
The prosecution claims that Markushin failed to provide documents confirming his volunteer activities abroad. The prosecutor asked the court to impose a pre-trial restraint in the form of 60-day detention or bail in the amount of UAH 40 million.
What’s next?
The issue of Markushin’s removal from office will be considered on 20 March. The court will decide whether he can return to his duties while the investigation is ongoing.
