Israeli Minister of Culture Miki Zohar has called for an official investigation into Qatar’s possible ties with current and former Israeli security officials. He said this on the air of the army radio station “GALATS”, Haaretz reports.
According to Zohar, the data he has shows that Qatar has been gradually expanding its influence in Israel, establishing contacts with representatives of the security forces and positioning itself as a “friend of Israel”, although in reality it is acting in the interests of hostile groups such as Hizbullah and Hamas.
“It is necessary to investigate what exactly the military and security officers – not only former, but also those still in service – received from Qatar,” the minister said.
He added that such activities by Qatar could pose a direct threat to Israel’s national security, as they involve potential links to individuals with access to sensitive information.
The security services have not yet commented on Zohar’s statements.
This statement was one of the loudest in the context of growing tensions over Qatar’s role as a mediator in the hostage negotiations and the situation in Gaza. According to experts, a public request for an investigation could have serious political consequences for both Israeli security and international relations with Doha.
