On Friday, 2 May 2025, Israel faced a new wave of regional tension when the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) intercepted a rocket fired from Yemen towards the north of the country, setting off sirens in the Galilee and Carmel. This incident was part of a series of security challenges, accompanied by domestic protests, a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and a tragic loss of life in the IDF.
Missile interception and public safety
The IDF confirmed that air defence systems successfully intercepted a rocket launched from Yemen, triggering a Red Alert warning in northern Israel. Magen David Adom (MDA) reported that one woman was injured while rushing for cover when the sirens sounded, but no other casualties or injuries were reported. The Israeli police sent forces to search for possible places where the rocket debris fell to ensure security in the affected areas. The military urged citizens to follow the instructions of the Home Front Command.
This is the second such incident in a day: earlier, sirens sounded due to another shell fired from Yemen, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Houthi forces in the region.
Humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens
Amid security developments, the International Committee of the Red Cross on Friday warned that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is on the verge of “complete collapse” due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The limited access to humanitarian aid and the destruction of infrastructure are only exacerbating the crisis.
The IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, who has been in office for about 60 days, has stressed the army’s position on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Zamir insisted that the IDF cannot allow hunger among Palestinian civilians, but also cannot allow Hamas to control the distribution of food aid.
