Israeli sources say that the latest round of talks with Lebanon is part of a broader strategy of normalisation between the two countries. A senior political official, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the Prime Minister’s policy has already had an impact on the Middle East, and Israel, together with the United States, intends to continue this process. This was reported by Channel 12.
Border issues and future steps
“We believe that normalisation with Lebanon is achievable after the changes that have taken place in this country. Lebanon has claims regarding the borders, we also have them, and we will discuss these issues,” the statement said.
Interestingly, at the next round of talks to be held in Lebanon, Israel will be represented by a political and diplomatic envoy rather than a military representative. This innovation may change the dynamics of the negotiations and help reduce tensions.
The return of five prisoners without the use of force
The source also stressed that Lebanon’s new president will now be able to announce the return of the five detainees without the use of force. This, in turn, should strengthen his position in the confrontation with the Hezbollah and Amal terrorist groups, which oppose the normalisation of relations.
Background to the negotiations
Earlier, a quadripartite meeting of representatives of Israel, Lebanon, the United States and France was held in the city of Naqoura in southern Lebanon. The main topic of discussion was 13 territorial points that have been a source of tension between the countries for more than two decades.
Will the new format of negotiations lead to long-term peace?
Although the process of normalisation is slow, these steps indicate a change in approaches to resolving territorial disputes and relations between Israel and Lebanon. Time will tell whether the parties will be able to find a compromise and reach a new level of cooperation.
