On Sunday morning, a joint team of experts from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Ministry of Defence arrived in Bangkok as part of an urgent humanitarian mission following the earthquake that struck South Asia on Friday.
The delegation includes engineer officers, civil affairs specialists, and rescuers from the National Rescue Unit of the Home Front Command. The coordination is carried out by the Israeli Army’s International Cooperation Unit, which is responsible for operational cooperation with other governments during emergencies.
The visit is not just symbolic
Upon arrival in Thailand, the Israeli team assessed the situation on the ground, discussed needs with local services and provided technical expertise to the Thai authorities on how to proceed in the risk areas. Particular attention was paid to the stability of infrastructure, the threat of aftershocks and the coordination of evacuation routes.
Israel is known for its effective disaster response system, and the participation of its experts in international missions has repeatedly saved hundreds of lives – from Turkey to Haiti.
International solidarity in action
This visit was an example of prompt international support, when countries do not leave each other alone in the face of disasters. The Israeli team is ready to stay in the region for as long as necessary and will continue to help with the restoration of destroyed infrastructure and security planning.
