Joint Exercises Eagle Partner 2024

In July, Armenia, a partner of Russia in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), will conduct joint military exercises with the United States, as announced by the Ministry of Defense of Armenia.

“From July 15 to 24, Armenia will host the Armenian-American joint exercises Eagle Partner 2024, aimed at preparing for participation in international peacekeeping missions,” the statement said.

Participants

The exercises will involve servicemen from the peacekeeping brigade of the Armenian Armed Forces, U.S. Army ground troops in Europe and Africa, and the Kansas National Guard. The Ministry of Defense noted that the exercises will include stabilization operations between conflicting parties during peacekeeping tasks.

Purpose of the Exercises

The goal of the exercises is to enhance coordination among units participating in international missions, exchange expertise in management and tactical communication, and strengthen the combat readiness of Armenian units.

Background on CSTO

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is a military-political international organization established in 1992. Its current members include Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Armenia (Armenia announced the suspension of its participation in the bloc in February 2024). In February, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that his country is not an ally of Russia in the war against Ukraine. In the same month, Armenia suspended its participation in the military bloc of the CSTO. On June 12, Pashinyan announced that Armenia would withdraw from the CSTO, with the exact date of withdrawal to be determined by Armenia.
